After an impressive inaugural season last year, Wesley College is looking to continue their success by making it past the MDCHA Semi-finals this season. Their road starts against the veteran team Mount Saint Mary’s. Mount was looking to bounce back after an offensive battle against F&M where they came up just short.
Wesley would jump out to a good start as Earl Johnson accepted a pass from Gerald Cassidy and buried it for the early one goal lead. But the Mount would come right back with a goal of their own off of the stick of Brendan Nahill just minutes later. However, this sparked the Wesley offense as they went on a three goal run in the next six minutes on goals from Brian Sanca, Tyler Piechoski and Matthew Phillipes. Before the end of the first, the Mount would reclaim one goal pulling within two on a goal from Sean Gunn.
The Mount hoped to pull even closer at the start of the second, but it was Wesley who got out of the gate first, with a goal from Cassidy off the first shift of the period. The next shift was no better for the Mount as Johnson scored his second of the game. Mount’s problems continued as midway through the period they were on the powerplay and Phillipes intercepted a pass and took it upon himself to net a short handed goal and a commanding five goal lead. Mount would get its powerplay going late in the period by Matthew Hohn netting one with just over a minute remaining in the period. But the Mount was still in a hole they would struggle to get out of in the third.
The final period ended up being all Wesley as Cassidy and Johnson went on a spree scoring 4 out of 5 Wesley goals, finishing the game with 5 and 4 points respectively. The fifth Wesley goal of the period was scored by Anderw Dexter on the powerplay as Wesley rolled to a 12-3 victory.
Wesley continues on the road this weekend as they faceoff against Johns Hopkins, before returning for their home opener against Dickinson. Mount gets a couple weeks rest now before returning to action against Hopkins as well in Frederick.
