American inches closer to the top with another win

2011-12-03

American University has really started to turn things around this season after a slow start. They have won their last three in a row, including last week against the undefeated Dickinson team. A win against the Mount would move them in to second place right behind Wesley College.

However, as the game got underway, the Mount would take advantage first, with a man advantage. With the early powerplay, Mount's leading scorer John Romano buried a shot for the early 1-0 lead. American came back midway through the period as they netted two goals in a row from Toby Mues and a shorthanded goal from Karim Addetia. However, after that shorthanded goal from American, the Mount still had the powerplay and was able to score their second powerplay goal of the game from Matthew Hohn. The game was now tied 2-2 and American's David Brenton decided this would be his breakout game as he went on a scoring spree. He scored twice for American before the end of the first period giving them the two goal lead.

At the beginning of the second American had a powerplay of their own and Josh Sarath buried a goal for a three goal lead. Brenton continued going on his spree in the second as he netted not one but two shorthanded goals bringing his total to four and American's lead to five goals. American continued taking penalties and continued giving the Mount powerplay chances. But it was American that was taking advantage of these as late in the period American's Alex Wald scored American's fourth shorthanded goal of the game and gave them a commanding six goal lead heading in to the third.

American played more defensively in the third and protected their large lead. The Mount's Ian Shultz was able to slip one more past the American goaltender but, it was not enough as the final horn sounded with a 8-3 American win.

Both teams now head in to the winter break before heading back in to action in late January.
