Due to the weather conditions the previous week, American University had only played two conference games and unfortunately they did not end the way they had hoped. They were finally back to action as they took on the red hot Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. After their initial loss to Dickinson, Hopkins had won four straight games including two in extra time. So they looked to keep their streak going and American looked to get their season back on track.
The game started with both teams looking to play conservative knowing that these two points were critical and neither wanted to make the first mistake. The back and forth action continued throughout the first but neither team surrendered an inch and the game would move in to the second scoreless.
The second began just as the first with both teams battling but defense and goaltending would reign supreme. It wasn’t until midway through the period when finally American’s Daniel Deacon began his stellar night with a goal off a pass from Toby Mues who also had a huge night. Minutes later, American was on the powerplay and Mues netted one of his own making the lead 2-0. Hopkins knew they needed to bounce back and they were able to do just that as Wyatt Roscoe ripped a shot that would bring the Blue Jays within one goal. But Mues had other plans as he scored a minute later giving American the two goal lead heading in to the final period.
Mues continued his breakthrough night as minutes in to the period he got his hat trick and gave American a nice three goal lead. Hopkins attempted to keep it close as Erick Sun was able to sneak one past American’s goaltender to cut the lead to two. But that would be all the offense they would be able to generate. American on the other hand, opened the flood gates and Mues and Deacon combined for even more tallies. Deacon completed his hat trick on two great individual efforts and Mues got his fourth of the game as American now had a commanding 7-2 lead. Rounding out the scoring was American’s Karim Addetia as he got one late on the powerplay finishing the game with an 8-2 American favor.
Hopkins hopes to bounce back next week as they play host to a floundering Gettysburg team. American takes another break from conference play before returning to host this same Hopkins team at Fort Dupont ice arena.
