Wesley has a big jump on league play as this weekend they played in their eighth league game. However, it would be their final league game of the semester so they hoped to end on a good note as they hosted Mount Saint Mary’s. The Mount was riding high off of their first league win against Gettysburg and hoped to keep it going.
The game started at a high pace but neither goaltender was surrendering a shot. The scoring wasn’t kicked off until late in the period when Wesley was awarded a powerplay. Wesley’s Bryan McDonald took the puck and netted the first of the game. This ignited the scoring as minutes later Wesley’s Warren Gross also scored unassisted. However, off of the ensuing faceoff, Mount was awarded a powerplay. They wasted little time as Ian Shultz scored off a pass from John Romano cutting their deficit to one goal heading in to the second period.
The second period almost mirrored the first as neither goaltender would surrender a goal for more than half of the period. Finally, it was McDonald again who took it all himself and gave Wesley the two goal lead once again. Immediately off the next faceoff, Wesley’s Earl Johnson rushed in to the Mount zone and buried a shot giving Wesley a comfortable three goal lead. Wesley was not done as Gerald Cassidy netted one more before the end of the second period giving Wesley a commanding four goal lead.
Mount knew they needed to come out strong if they wanted to get back in to this game. However, it was Wesley who would tally first as Cassidy once again scored for the Wolverines. This might have been the spark the Mount needed as they went on to score three unanswered goals off the sticks of Christopher Arthur, Kevin Franco and Romano closing the gap to two goals. The momentum had shifted and the Mount was now awarded another powerplay and looked to continue their drive. However, Wesley’s Matt Phillipes was able to steal the puck and score his third shorthanded goal of the year giving Wesley a three goal lead once again. Less than a minute later the Mount’s Shultz tried to keep it close with his second of the game, but it was too little too late and Wesley would go on to win 7-5.
Wesley is now on break from MDCHA play until the New Year, where the Mount has a make-up game with Hopkins in two weeks.
