The season has not gone very well for the Gettysburg Bullets thus far as they have only been able to muster one shootout victory and three painful losses, including a forfeit. Johns Hopkins on the other hand is having a banner year, winning four out of their six games thus far.
As this game would get under way, the two teams not only had each other as opponents but one more showed his face. The referee. There was a constant flow in and out of the penalty box including a five minute for each team. All of this ruined the flow of the play and neither team was able to get things rolling in the first and the score remained knotted at zero.
The second was no different, in fact there was almost a penalty called every minute of that period for the first half of the period. However, on one of the four-on-four plays, Gettysburg’s Adam Jacobs was able to skate passed the Hopkins defense and roof it past the goaltender for the one goal lead. As the period continued, there was a rare opportunity of five-on-five hockey and Hopkins was battling in front of Gettysburg’s net and David Kilgariff was able to poke home a rebound to tie the game at one. Minutes later, Gettysburg was on a powerplay and off the faceoff Tyler Raphael took the pass and blasted a slapshot that hit a leg in front and deflected past the Hopkins goalie for a 2-1 Gettysburg lead heading in to the final period.
The penalties did not stop in the final frame, but they did slow a bit. Both teams knew the next goal was crucial and although difficult to find their game with so many penalties, they needed to dig down and muster some offense. Late in the period, Gettysburg’s James Patterson, took a shot and followed up on his own rebound to take the two goal lead. But Hopkins was not done yet as less than a minute later, Wyat Roscoe had the puck below the Gettysburg goal line and slipped it past the netminder to pull within one goal once again. In the final minutes there was a fury of offense and Hopkins tried pulling their goaltender for the extra attacker but to no avail as Gettysburg won the penalty-filled game 3-2.
Johns Hopkins now plays their make-up game against Mount Saint Mary’s while, Gettysburg faces divisional opponent Franklin & Marshall.
