Wesley wins another on the road

2011-10-22

Despite Wesley’s slow start with a loss to Dickinson and Hopkins in overtime, they have been on a streak in the past three games, and most impressive is that all of the games have been on the road.  They looked to keep that streak going on the road as they traveled to Penn State Harrisburg.

PSU Harrisburg has had a two week break since they last played and that can be a good thing or a bad thing for a team.  Unfortunately for them it turned out to be a negative.  They got off to a slow start and Wesley quickly took advantage on the second shift of the game as Warren Gross netted his first of the season.  The game would stay that way for most of the period until PSU finally started getting their legs going with a few minutes remaining and were able to tie the game on a goal from David Farr.  But much like they did the previous week against Gettysburg, Wesley was able to score two goals in the final minutes to take a nice two goal lead in to the next period off the sticks of Nick Greco and Earl Johnson.

Defense was the name of the game for most of the second period as both teams holding off the other’s offense.  It wasn’t until late in the period when PSU was awarded a rare powerplay in a game that saw more goals than penalties, and Brent Antolik blasted a shot past the Wesley goaltender to pull within one goal.  But Wesley’s determination showed its head again in the final minute of the period as Johnson netted his second of the game.

Wesley picked up right where they left off beginning the third as off the opening shift, Johnson took the puck in again and scored less than a minute in to the final period completing his hat trick.  Less than two minutes later Wesley’s Matthew Phillipes gave Wesley a comfortable 6-2 lead.  PSU tried one last ditch effort by scoring two late goals from Ben Acri and Michael Van Horn, but it would not be enough and Wesley would continue their streak with another road win, 6-4.

Wesley final returns home in two weeks as they host newcomer Franklin & Marshall.  Penn State Harrisburg travels across the Susquehanna River to take on undefeated Dickinson College.
