Wesley topples two on the road

2011-10-16

After Wesley's loss at home, they looked to rebound with a long road trip which includes three games against conference opponents. Frist up was American University. Although it was a tight match up Wesley was able to start their road trip off on a good note by winning the game 3-1.

Wesley continued their weekend road trip after a good win against divisional opponent American; they would now travel to York, PA to take on Gettysburg College. This would be a rematch of last season's MDCHA semi-final.

The game started with a lot of neutral zone play, with neither team wanting to make an early mistake.  But, a few minutes in Gettysburg began to take a couple of penalties and found themselves down 5 on 3. They started the kill off very well and it looked like they would survive this early handicap. But with .05 remaining on the first penalty Wesley’s Chris Bahm was able to slip a shot past freshman goaltender Jonathan Lipshutz taking the early 1-0 lead. Just past the midway point of the period, Gburg found themselves on a powerplay of their own and Adam Jacobs took it upon himself to carry the puck in to the Wesley zone and in an attempt to throw the puck out front, it took a Bullet bounce off the Wesley’s goaltender, Tyler Piechoski and in to the back of the net tying the game at one. As time time was winding down in the first, with less than a minute remaining, Gettysburg’s John LeClerc broke out in front of the net took a shot that deflected up and over the Piechoski in to the back of the net. Gettysburg would take their 2-1 lead in to the locker room but because of their frequent trips to the sin bin were being outshot. In order to keep their lead they would need to stay out of the box.

Unfortunately that did not happen for the Bullets. Their penalties increased and Wesley took advantage. Wesley went on a streak and scored three more goals, two from Trevor Sullivan and one from Gerald Cassidy, who started his four point night with that goal.  Gettysburg was able to salvage one goal off a blast from the point off the stick of Chris Murray.  But Wesley was not done as they turned on the intensity late in the period and scored two goals in the final minute, again off the stick of Cassidy and Earl Johnson.

In the final act Gettysburg still continued to frequent the penalty box including another 5 on 3 that resulted in another goal for Wesley off a blast from Chris Bahm. Gettysburg tried one last ditch effort with a goal from Lucien Reichert, but it was certainly not enough as Wesley would hang on to their 3 goal lead and win 7-4.

Gettysburg now looks to take on heated rival Dickinson next weekend, who is undefeated in their first two matchups.  Wesley hopes to keep their road streak alive as they now travel to Penn State Harrisburg to take on the new Lions.
