Penn State Harrisburg was riding high off of their first win in teams’ history two weeks ago against American University and was hoping to keep their early success going against veteran Johns Hopkins. But Hopkins was having a steak of their own, coming off a thrilling overtime victory against Wesley College. So both teams were looking to grab these two crucial points.
Some rough-housing started almost immediately as off the first shift Penn State was awarded a powerplay and almost as quickly as the game began, PSU’s Stefan Eshleman was able to carry the puck in and score on his own taking the early one goal lead. But unfortunately for PSU, their offense would stop there. Minutes later, Hopkins was on a powerplay of their own and Joe Leanza received a pass from John Murren and buried it to tie the game at one. As time was winding down in the first, Hopkins was once again on a powerplay, this time a full five minutes, and TJ Bozada was able to net his first goal of the season to give them a one goal lead heading in to the second period.
The second period started slow with neither team being able to capitalize on their chances and each netminder standing their ground. It wasn’t until eight minutes remaining when Hopkins’ Erick Sun scored not one but two goals, thirty seconds a part to give Hopkins a comfortable 4-1 lead. Before the period would end, Hopkins’ Murren would add a goal of his own to gain the commanding 5-1 lead.
PSU Harrisburg tried their best in the third to get back in to it, but Johns Hopkins goaltender Josh Charest denied them of every opportunity and the game would remain 5-1 as the final horn sounded. Hopkins looks to keep the ball rolling against Southern rival Mount Saint Mary’s next week, while PSU Harrisburg looks to rebound at home against Wesley College.
