The last Mason Dixon game that Gettysburg played it was a crushing overtime defeat losing the championship to the University of Maryland. Maryland has since moved out and has been replaced by newcomer, Franklin and Marshall, who won in their MDCHA debut against Mount Saint Mary's. Just as the game last season ended dramatically, the 2011-12 season would start with a dramatic finish.
The game started well for F&M. They were awarded an early powerplay and wasted little time as Ben Feldberg put one past the Bullets net minder. Feldberg wasn't done, as minutes later he netted his second of the game. However, Gettysburg was determined not to head in to the period down by two goals. With only a few minutes remaining in the first, Gettysburg's Lucien Reichert poked one home pulling within one goal.
The second period was all defense. Both goaltenders put up walls and shut down the opposing team's offense. It would come down to the third period with F&M still leading by a goal. But minutes in to the final frame, Gettysburg was awarded a powerplay and a blast from the stick of Jon Bloom found it's way in to the back of the net tying the game at two. Neither team could finish each other off in regulation so the game was heading in to overtime.
Overtime still did not determine a winner and the game's fate would be decided by a three player shootout. The Diplomat's first shot was denied. Gettysburg's first shot taken by John Rupp found the back of the net. F&M's second shot was also turned away by the goaltender. The Bullet's second shot was also steered away. F&M needed to score on their third shot, but it was denied once again and the game resulted in a 3-2 Gettysburg shootout victory.
F&M still grabs a point and continues to a top of their division in the MDCHA. They now have a three week break before heading back on to the ice against Johns Hopkins. Gettysburg will hope to continue their momentum by hosting Wesley in two weeks.
